See China’s first HD snowboard movie (for free)

If you’re into snowboarding and live in Shanghai then here’s an event for you over the weekend.

Mellow Parks is a group of snowboarders based up north near Beijing and run the snow parks at Nanshan, Xiling, and Qiaobo. This weekend they’re headed to Shanghai to show off their first snowboard movie production called “Happy Niu Year” – a witty play on words if you’re not familiar with the word for Ox (it’s the year of the ox this year).

When: November 21, starting at 8pm
Where: The SOURCE gallery, Shanghai. 158 Xinle Road
How much: Free (and you get a free copy of the DVD) There will also be prizes at the event.

Bike Polo anyone?

With the amount of wankers wearing shirts with polo players on them you could be mistaken that Polo is a popular past time in Shanghai. However, Shanghai is a terrible place if you’re a polo player. The lack of open spaces and shortage of young fillies to hire is such a conundrum for locals and foreigners alike. Luckily, a couple of postmodern young go-getters decided to ditch the horses for bikes and create their own version of ‘Bike Polo’.

As the name suggests players use bikes instead of horses and substitute grass for concrete. Using what looks like home made sticks, the rules look pretty much the same as polo – like I have any idea what those rules are. The result: mixing sticks and bike spokes into one game is surely going cause a few bruises.

According to the video below the games ~~kicks off~~, ~~bike off~~, ~~tees off~~, starts on Saturday afternoons at the Shanghai Indoor Football Stadium. So, stop complaining that “all there is to do in Shanghai on the weekend is shop, drink, dance, puke, repeat”, and man or woman up, fix up your bike and head on down. Everyone, including dudes with ladybikes, are said to be welcome down at Shanghai Bike Polo Club.

Skateboarding in Shanghai

On the weekend more than 50 skateboarders pulled up a few boxes and rails and were showing their street skating skills just outside the Shanghai Science and Technology Park metro station. I’m not sure whether this is a regular event or a one-off but I pulled up a seat and took a few snaps.

With no seemingly suitable surf beaches or ski-able mountains the skateboarding and bmx scene looks fairly competitive in Shanghai. The city is well catered for skateboarders with dedicated parks around town. After 11pm around it city it’s not uncommon to see BMX riders converge and show their stuff – when the traffic is much less hectic.

For newbies and seasoned skaters looking to get into the local scene I’d recommend dropping into stores like Icon X who can point you in the right direction in regard to local laws, skating lessons, and events.

Video: Riding a bicycle through Shanghai

This is a quick video showing how it is to ride through the streets of Shanghai on a bike. The quality was crap but I was riding one handed and using a point and shoot camera.

Yes, that is a basket on the front of my bike. Yes, it’s what dudes do in Shanghai. No, that doesn’t make it a “lady bike”.

Touch football in Shanghai

This week I went to the midweek touch football (that’s touch rugby or 6 down for you South Africans) at Huo Che Tou Stadium. It’s been a while since running anywhere except on a treadmill and I haven’t ran faster than a canter since dodging some traffic on Beijing Lu about a month ago so your trusty scribe was a bit rusty. Well, that’s my excuse anyhow.

Shanghai Touch Rugby

The crowd are from all over though I heard a few Aussie and Kiwi accents, the odd British accent, one Irish and even a few yanks (or maybe they were Canadians?). While relaxed and friendly everyone is keen to get in and have a good run around so be prepared to sweat and have a laugh. There’s a good vibe to these games with a good split of guys and girls.

A word of caution: The ground is synthetic grass so wear long socks if you plan to slide around and think before diving for that meat pie in the corner. No metal studs.

Where: Huo Che Tou Stadium, 955 Gong He Xin Lu. It’s right next to Zhong Shan Bei Lu station on Line 1.
When: Tuesday Night, 8-10pm
